The Dormer sheep, a white-wool breed developed in South Africa in 1927, is prized for its rapid growth and adaptability. Created by crossbreeding Dorset Horn rams with German Merino ewes, the Dormer was designed to produce rams for crossbreeding and lambs that grow quickly and economically, particularly in cold and wet climates. Suitable for both extensive and intensive farming, the breed thrives in feedlots and is known for its excellent feed conversion ratio. Dormer sheep are highly fertile, with ewes exhibiting strong maternal instincts and a high likelihood of producing multiples. The breed is also non-selective in its grazing, making it ideal for diverse farming operations. Rams weigh between 110kg and 130kg, and lambing percentages range from 120% to 150%. With their naturally polled heads and fine, kemp-free wool, Dormers are an excellent choice for crossbreeding with wool-producing breeds.
